I haven’t had much time for blogging on the past few years. Life has been too busy. But since we moved to Luxembourg, I thought it would be a good idea to start writing again. When I read my old posts (in my blog In Portuguese), it’s nice to see our beginning in the United States and to relive nice moments through some of my pictures.
But why are we in Luxembourg?
My husband works for Amazon. He already did work for Amazon back in Seattle and was offered a job here in Luxembourg, where the company’s European HQ is. It wasn’t an easy decision to make (I had to quit my job at Microsoft, for example), but we felt that an opportunity like this doesn’t come very often, especially considering that my son is still young to be adventurous like this. We saw this as a good opportunity to travel around Europe (that we always loved) and also a good career move for my husband.
Luxembourg (officially known as Grand Duchy of Luxembourg) is one of the smallest European countries and the only grand duchy still in existence.
So here are some key facts I collected during my research:
Name: Luxembourg; official name: Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
Languages: Luxembourgish (local language), French and German. French is the most widely spoken. English and Portuguese are the two non-official languages most commonly spoken.
Neighboring countries: France, Germany and Belgium (Luxembourg is a landlocked country)
Form of government: Constitutional Monarchy under a system of Parliamentary Democracy
Currency: Euro
Population: a little over 500,000 inhabitants. The capital city also called Luxembourg just recently reached 100,000 inhabitants.
Area: 2586 km2 / 999 sq miles and measures 82 km (51 mi) long and 57 km (35 mi) wide
Time zone: UTC+1 (currently we are one hour ahead of London, 5 hours from Brazil and 9 hours from Seattle – places I connect the most to)
Curious personal fact: my mom’s side of the family (Colling family) actually came from Luxembourg. So, in a way, I’m returning to my local origins.
And here are some of the pictures I took when we got here last January:
